Calculation Methodology & Rate Card Architecture

Deterministic formulas, regional bandwidth multipliers, and empirical test bench standards powering the Daktan infrastructure model.

Operational Scope & Engineering Purpose

Daktan is an independent cloud infrastructure benchmarking utility and technical documentation resource built for systems architects, DevOps engineers, and FinOps analysts. Standard cloud vendor pricing pages frequently obscure total cost of ownership (TCO) by separating per-GB storage rates from origin cache-miss egress, lifecycle retrieval penalties, minimum object size padding, and Class A/B API request surcharges.

Daktan solves this by executing a deterministic four-vector client-side cost model paired with 18 architectural reference guides covering S3 egress mathematics, CDN cache-hit optimization, Origin Shield request collapsing, Kubernetes inter-zone routing, and VPC endpoint engineering.

Deterministic Mathematical Equations

Every projection generated on Daktan is computed in real time within the browser using the following equations:

// 1. Origin vs. CDN Edge Egress Bandwidth Split (with Origin Shield Factor)
Effective_Origin_Miss_Ratio = (1 - (Cache_Hit_Pct / 100)) × (Origin_Shield_Active ? 0.40 : 1.00)
Origin_Egress_GB = Total_Egress_GB × Effective_Origin_Miss_Ratio
CDN_Edge_Egress_GB = Total_Egress_GB × (1 - Effective_Origin_Miss_Ratio)
// 2. Monthly Storage & Lifecycle Retrieval Expenditure
Storage_Cost = Stored_GB × Tier_Storage_Rate × Region_Storage_Mult
Retrieval_Cost = Origin_Egress_GB × Tier_Retrieval_Rate
// 3. Class A (Mutating) & Class B (Read) API Operation Overhead
API_Cost = (PUT_List_Millions × Class_A_Rate) + (GET_Head_Millions × Class_B_Rate)
// 4. Total Monthly Infrastructure Run-Rate
Monthly_TCO = Storage_Cost + Retrieval_Cost + Egress_Cost + API_Cost + Addons_Cost

Provider Rate Card Baseline Matrix

Provider comparisons are calibrated against published list pricing for standard US-East / EU-Central regions prior to custom enterprise commit discounts:

Infrastructure Stack Storage ($/GB-mo) Origin Egress ($/GB) CDN Edge ($/GB) Class A / B (per 1M)
Cloudflare R2 + CDN $0.0150 $0.000 $0.000 $4.50 / $0.36
Backblaze B2 + Bunny CDN $0.0060 $0.000 (Peered) $0.010 $4.00 / $0.40
Wasabi Hot Storage + CDN $0.0069 $0.000 (≤1:1 Ratio) $0.015 $0.00 / $0.00
DigitalOcean Spaces + CDN $0.0200 $0.010 $0.010 Included
AWS S3 + CloudFront $0.0230 $0.000 (To CF) $0.042 (Blended) $5.00 / $0.40
Google Cloud Storage + CDN $0.0200 $0.085 $0.035 $5.00 / $0.40
Azure Blob + Front Door $0.0180 $0.080 $0.032 $5.50 / $0.44

Model Assumptions & Known Boundary Conditions

To ensure transparency when presenting Daktan TCO outputs in architectural reviews, engineers should note three boundary conditions modeled by the engine:

  • Decimal (`GB`) vs. Binary (`GiB`) Normalization: The calculator models 1 TB as 1,000 GB (`10¹² bytes`) for uniform cross-provider comparison. On invoices from binary-metered providers (`AWS S3`, `GCP`, `Azure`), 1,000 decimal GB corresponds to `931.32 GiB`.
  • Wasabi 1:1 Egress Fair-Use Threshold: In the Provider TCO Matrix, if configured monthly egress exceeds 100% of active stored volume, the model automatically applies an overage bandwidth coefficient to reflect Wasabi's 1:1 egress ratio policy.
  • Pre-Discount List Pricing: All outputs reflect public On-Demand / Pay-As-You-Go list rates prior to custom Enterprise Discount Programs (AWS EDP) or 12-month CDN volume commits.

Lab Verification & Empirical Benchmark Environment

Throughput logs, time-to-first-byte (`TTFB`) distributions, and invoice reconciliations cited across our engineering guides are measured directly on dedicated test nodes rather than extrapolated from vendor marketing sheets:

US-East Test Node: AWS EC2 c6i.2xlarge (8 vCPU, 16 GiB RAM, 12.5 Gbps ENA, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, us-east-1a)
EU-Central Test Node: Hetzner Cloud CPX31 (4 vCPU AMD EPYC, 8 GB RAM, 10 Gbps shared uplink, Nuremberg eu-central)
Tooling Versions: s5cmd v2.2.2 · rclone v1.68.1 · restic v0.17.1 · FFmpeg n7.0.2 · curl 8.5.0 (nghttp2 / quiche)

Editorial Governance, Independence & Maintainer Attribution

Daktan is an independent technical publication maintained by cloud systems architects and FinOps practitioners. We do not accept paid rankings, vendor sponsorships, or affiliate kickbacks to alter the ordering of providers in our TCO calculator matrix—all rankings are sorted strictly by deterministic mathematical cost (`monthlyTotal` ascending).

All CLI configurations (`rclone`, `s5cmd`, `ffmpeg`, `aws-cli`), Terraform HCL modules, and edge worker scripts published across our 18 engineering guides are tested against live S3-compatible endpoints prior to publication.
